Opening to the Word

You can spend a few moments in silence,
focussing on your breathing
to become more mindful of the present moment
and to open yourself more fully
to God’s presence within you.

Short Reflection

Sometimes it’s quite useful to take Bible readings out of their immediate context.

Today’s Old Testament reading is about the Judgement on Assyria, which had long been a bane for the people of Israel. The use of musical instruments was to accompany God’s wrath wreaked on these people.

Great for a B-movie!

However, if we see this as part of the eternal battle between good and evil, then it seems fitting to celebrate the victory of goodness over evil.

As Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s song has it:

Goodness is stronger than evil;
love is stronger than hate;
light is stronger than darkness;
life is stronger than death.

Victory is ours, victory is ours
through him who loved us.
Victory is ours, victory is ours
through him who loved us.

Some of us reading this today may have lived relatively sheltered lives, compared to the oppressed, the little ones.

But we can share in this celebration that wherever one person stands up for justice, there is the Kingdom is at work.

And so we can celebrate, as on a day of festival.
