Praying at Home Today: Monday 27 July 2020
A warm welcome to PrayingAtHome.com, where you can find some worship resources for praying at home today or wherever you are.
We hope these readings, prayers, music and the short reflection will help you stay in touch with the Church and to sustain you on your journey through life.
If this is your first visit to this website, then you might like to read about the common elements and the suggested structure for each day’s prayer.
Please note that with effect from 29 June 2020, we have reverted to the Track 1 “semi-continuous” Old Testament readings (this also affects the psalm or equivalent response); the New Testament and Gospel readings remain unchanged.
Opening to the Word
You can spend a few moments in silence,
focussing on your breathing
to become more mindful of the present moment
and to open yourself more fully
to God’s presence within you.
In the name of the living God,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Short reading
Who is wise and understanding among you?
Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom.Quis sapiens et disciplinatus inter vos?
Ostendat ex bona conversatione operationem suam in mansuetudine sapientiae.Lequel parmi vous est sage et intelligent?
Qu’il montre, par un bon comportement, ses œuvres empreintes de douceur et de sagesse.
James 3:13
The Liturgy of the Word *
Here are today’s Bible readings.
You can read just one, or all of them if you have time.
Short Reflection
Gentleness born of wisdom
The opening verses from our NT reading (James’s Epistle) contrast two kinds of wisdom: our wisdom as fallen human beings and the wisdom from above.
We hear plenty of s0-called wisdom from leaders around the world, little of which is helpful to a world facing climate emergency, the current pandemic, war and instability and other issues affecting us.
And so often, it is the little people who try in vain to speak out, to make us see sense. Their voices are truly prophetic.
This wisdom from above ties in with what we heard in Isaiah’s prophesy of the coming Messiah, a few days ago:
Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;I have put my spirit upon him;
he will bring forth justice to the nations.He will not cry or lift up his voice,
or make it heard in the street;a bruised reed he will not break,
and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.He will not grow faint or be crushed
until he has established justice in the earth;
and the coastlands wait for his teaching.Isaiah 42:1-4

Prayer Suggestions
We bring before God the places of conflict around the world
and those working for justice and peace.
For refugees and those driven from their homes.
We pray for those whose anniversary of passing occurs at this time
and for those who grieve them;
may they still live on in our hearts and minds
until we are reunited in the coming Kingdom.
a moment of silence
Pray for us all.

The Lord’s Prayer
We can say the Lord’s Prayer in any language or version we choose.
Here it is, in English, Latin and French.
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom,
the power and the glory are yours.
Now and for ever. Amen.
Pater noster, qui es in cælis;
sanctificatur nomen tuum:
adveniat regnum tuum;
fiat voluntas tua,
sicut in cælo, et in terra.
Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie:
et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris:
et ne nos inducas in tentationem:
sed libera nos a malo.
Quia tuum est regnum,
et potestas, et gloria, in saecula.
Amen.
Amen.
Concluding prayer
O Wisdom,
you came forth from the mouth of the Most High
and, reaching from beginning to end,
you ordered all things mightily and sweetly.
Come, and teach us the way of prudence.
Amen.
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Benedicamus Domino.
Deo gratias.
Thank you for joining us in praying at home.
Oremus pro invicem.
