Praying at Home Today: Friday 13 May 2022
Praying at home today:
In the depth of the night, light is revealed
The Lord is risen!
He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

Opening to the Word
You can spend a few moments in silence,
focussing on your breathing
to become more mindful of the present moment
and to open yourself more fully
to God’s presence within you.
Short reading
As I watched in the night visions,
I saw one like a human being
coming with the clouds of heaven.
And he came to the Ancient One
and was presented before him.
Aspiciebam ergo in visione noctis,
et ecce cum nubibus caeli
quasi filius hominis veniebat,
et usque ad antiquum dierum pervenit:
et in conspectu ejus obtulerunt eum.
Pendant que je regardais dans mes visions nocturnes,
quelqu’un qui ressemblait à un fils de l’homme
est venu avec les nuées du ciel.
Il s’est avancé vers l’Ancien des jours
et on l’a fait approcher de lui.
Daniel 7:13a

Short Reflection
Dreams and visions
In the Bible, we hear a lot about dreams and visions. Many are quite weird, as dreams tend to be.
The apocalyptic visions, from Daniel and Revelation, are difficult to understand. They will, naturally, come from particular cultures and ways of thinking about God.
Perhaps we don’t think of God as the “Ancient One” or “Ancient of Days”, even if well-loved hymns use these expressions!
(Philip Pullmann is quite disparaging of this image in His Dark Materials, an allegory of religion gone wrong, in which authoritarianism, intolerance, and ignorance are rightly rejected in favour of a questioning worldview.)
Perhaps this reading can also be an allegory for discerning right from wrong, an action that requires freedom of thought and calmness of mind.

The Lord’s Prayer
in English, Latin and French
– The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom,
the power and the glory are yours,
now and for ever.
Amen.
– Pater noster
Pater noster, qui es in cælis;
sanctificetur nomen tuum:
adveniat regnum tuum;
fiat voluntas tua,
sicut in cælo, et in terra.
Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie:
et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris:
et ne nos inducas in tentationem:
sed libera nos a malo.
Quia tuum est regnum,
et potestas, et gloria, in saecula.
Amen.
Amen.
Concluding prayer
O God,
the light of whose truth stretches out to those who go astray,
that they may return to the path of righteousness:
give your grace to all who profess themselves Christians,
that they may cast out what is harmful,
and pursue all that gives life;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end. Amen.
