Opening to the Word
You can spend a few moments in silence,

Short Reflection
Listening to Sunday’s New Testament reading reminded me of a scene in CS Lewis’s ‘Narnia’ story, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
(I’m hoping you’ve read the story or at least won’t be too upset by me giving the story away!)
Aslan, standing in for the traitor, Edmund, has been killed by the Witch to fulfil the requirements of what is written in the Deep Magic from the beginning of Time.
Unbeknown to her, however, there is a Deeper Magic from Before the Dawn of Time, which states that if an innocent being takes on the punishment, then the Deep Magic is undone and Death is destroyed.
Following his appearance to Susan and Lucy, Aslan goes to the Witch’s palace and restores to life all who have been turned into stone; these are then enabled to join in the fight and finally conquer the Witch.
Although CS Lewis’s parallels with the Scriptures are perhaps a bit too obvious, this is the first time that I related that last scene to “visiting the spirits in prison”.
Most glorious Lord of life, that on this day
didst make thy triumph over death and sin,
and having harrowed hell, didst bring away
captivity thence captive, us to win.

- for peace and stability in Myanmar and other places of conflict.

Concluding prayer
Almighty God,
whose Son fasted forty days in the wilderness,
and was tempted as we are, yet did not sin:
give us grace to discipline ourselves in submission to your Spirit,
that, as you know our weakness,
so we may know your power to save;
through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God,
world without end.
