Praying at home today: stand firm in joyful hope of redemption
A warm welcome to PrayingAtHome.com, where you can find worship resources for praying at home today or wherever you are.
We hope these readings, prayers, music and the short reflection will help you stay in touch with the Church and to sustain you on your journey through life.
We follow the Track 2 “related” Old Testament reading and psalm (or equivalent response).
Opening to the Word
You can spend a few moments in silence,
focussing on your breathing
to become more mindful of the present moment
and to open yourself more fully
to God’s presence within you.
In the name of the living God,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
I will restore the fortunes of my people.
Et convertam captivitatem populi mei.
Je ramènerai les déportés de mon peuple.

Here are today’s Bible readings.
You can read just one, or all three if you have time.

Israel’s fortunes restored
We’ve heard so much recently about how Israel will be punished for its sinfulness, it’s turning away from God.
Now we have another prophet, Amos who, with Hosea, is probably one of the greatest of the minor prophets.
They both flourished in the middle of the 8th century BCE in the northern kingdom
His message, in summary, was: this country is in a dire state. Despite warnings in the past (locusts and drought), trifling with God is perilous. Your carefree society is unstable, built on rotten foundations and ripe for destruction.
They may have enemies but these peoples’ crimes are as nothing compared to Israel’s own guilt. They are crooked, perverse and, like a building without straight walls, must fall.
And yet, on that day, the tottering hut will be rebuilt, its gaps filled and its ruins restored, rebuilt as in olden days.
The time is surely coming, says the Lord,
when the one who ploughs shall overtake the one who reaps,
and the treader of grapes the one who sows the seed;
the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
and all the hills shall flow with it.
I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel,
and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them;
they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine,
and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit.
I will plant them upon their land,
and they shall never again be plucked up
out of the land that I have given them,
says the Lord your God.
Until that time, that Day of the Lord,
we are called,
as St Paul says,
to stand firm in the Lord.
We pray at home today, bringing before God the needs of the world:
- for peace amongst nations, in our homes and in our hearts
- for those who are sick
- for those facing uncertainty at this time
- for those who care for the elderly in care homes and in their own homes
- for those in any kind of need.
(As the Church commemorates Congan (abbot and bishop, brother of St Kentigern),
in Holy Trinity, Stirling, we pray today
for Bishop Mark, consecrated as Bishop of Moray in 2007.)
We pray for all who have asked for our prayers.
a moment of silence
Pray for us all.

The Lord’s Prayer
We can say the Lord’s Prayer in any language or version we choose.
Here it is, in English, Latin and French.
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom,
the power and the glory are yours.
Now and for ever. Amen.
Pater noster, qui es in cælis;
sanctificatur nomen tuum:
adveniat regnum tuum;
fiat voluntas tua,
sicut in cælo, et in terra.
Amen.
since without you we cannot please you:
let the work of your mercy
in all things guide our hearts;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end.
Returning to the world
Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Thank you for joining us in praying at home.
Oremus pro invicem.
In these strange times, we are called to trust
